Rachael's Story

Rachael is 27 years of age from Ireland and is now living in the Uk with her Boyfriend.

Rachael has Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and uses Hot Yoga as a holistic treatment for her illness. Rachael has practiced yoga occasionally but wanted to try Hot Yoga to help 'cleanse' my lymphatic system. Since Rachael’s first class back in March (2017), she has become totally addicted.

Hot Yoga has improved her flexibility (the heat really helps Rachael go deeper into the pose) and fitness, enhanced her immunity, helped her control stress, but most importantly, it taught Rachael how to breathe - something so simple and necessary, yet she didn't know how to it before.

Each class feels like a gentle reminder that you're 'alive' Rachael said - you sweat, you stretch, you relax and you breathe.

Rachael has been diagnosed four times with cancer. At the tender age of 10, Rachael was told she had Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Rachael had the all clear and the relapsed at the age of 12 and then again at 16. Then 9 years later at the age of 26 Rachael's cancer had returned once again.

Rachael was surprised and so were her family and doctors. The doctor advised Rachael to start treatment asap, but Rachael was hesitant to start as she was very surprised cancer had returned again. Rachael wanted to find out why it had come back again. Rachael to explore and see if she could find out why it had come back and not just bandage it up and have treatment.

Rachael decided to try a holistic approach to her cancer this time around, so she started a ketogenic diet on her healing journey. Rachael is a nutritionist and investigated what could her in this regards. Rachael started her Ketogenic diet with no sugars of any kind, which feeds cancer, plus Rachael wanted to focus on my gut health & immunity.

The second thing Rachael knew was that she wanted to "distress". Before Rachael was diagnosed for the fourth time she was under a lot of pressure and really stressed. Rachael found that looking back at her life she had suffered from anxiety and she felt she needed to find a way to deal with that. This is how Rachael found Hot Yoga! Rachael's friend was a member of Grace Lounge (hot yoga studio) and told Rachael she believed this would be beneficial for her. Rachael had done yoga before not hot yoga. Rachael said she knew hot yoga would help cleanse her lymphatic system because Hodgkins is a cancer of the lymphatic system and she knew this would be very beneficial for her plus detox her system at the same time.

Rachael said she remembers after her first class going into savasana (10 minutes at the end for relaxation) she felt real relaxation for the first time in such a long time and from that moment she knew that hot yoga would really help her. Rachael practiced hot yoga to help her for about 10 months and it was working really well. Rachael's cancer was not getting any worse but it was also not getting any better either, so Rachael decided to start treatment. Rachael said having that time beforehand to really concentrate on herself and get herself well has helped her have treatment and hot yoga has also helped her throughout her treatment keeping her well and helping her stay strong as well as detoxing. Practicing hot yoga gave Rachael a sense of calmness to help her through her treatment. Rachael said the things that use to stress her out before just don't stress her out as they did before, she said its like she has turned down the stress dial, all through the stress will never go away she can control it better and she really believes it is because she now practices hot yoga. Rachael challenges herself throughout the practice and can settle for her time and her time on her yoga mat has given her calmness and helped her manage her stress. Rachael has also discovered self-love from her yoga practice. Rachael shares her experience at grace lounge as a family unit and everyone at GL are supportive and very friendly.

Rachael's message

If anyone is struggling with cancer or is going through cancer, or wants to prevent cancer she would highly recommend they try hot yoga, because we all know that stress is such a huge factor to play in cancer development. Rachael believes if you can master the stress you will do well, and repeats she would recommend to anyone and everyone to just have that time to yourself and to gain that control back again, as she believes it is a big part as the control over your life has been taken away, but you can experience all these new things as well as challenge yourself.

Rachael’ Endorsemnet

At Grace lounge, they have gone above and beyond to execute a perfect 'hot yoga experience'. I especially love the fact that there are no distracting mirrors in the studio – instead, it's controlled mood lighting helps deliver calmness and zone you out.

The diversity of the classes is fantastic and I always find something to suit my mood! Grace, Lauren and all the instructors have created such a friendly atmosphere and show a genuine interest in helping clients in any way they can. Once I step into the studio, I forget about everything and focus entirely on myself, how I'm feeling and how my body is moving - I'd recommend everyone to try it at least once!"
